Birds of Paradise: The Maui Wedding of Shannon and Robert
These two are just about the sweetest couple you could ever meet! We first photographed them at our pre-wedding photo session on Maui’s youngest lava flow (La Perouse); It was a beautiful spring day with wildflowers blooming out of the black lava rock and butterflies buzzing about. The sunset was vibrant and colorful, and small surf made it possible to enter the water and capture an absolutely gorgeous portrait with a sky-meets-sea backdrop.
A couple days later we photographed their wedding at Wailea’s Marriott Beach Resort. It was a perfect day for a beach wedding and the resort property provided us with stunning settings for portraiture, details and getting ready photographs. Their theme was “Birds of Paradise” (Shannon’s favorite flower), all the floral arrangements were created by Maui’s top florist, Dellables. The entire day was magic… full of beauty and love – A special day for a special couple. Congratulations to Shannon and Robert!

Engaged on Maui – Andrea + Adam
Andrea and Adam got engaged just two days before this session; They were riding bicycles down Maui’s largest mountain, Haleakala, when Adam popped the question and Andrea said, “Yes!”. It was a last minute booking, and we were so excited to have the opportunity to create a collection of images celebrating their new engagement. We met these two at a secret beach along the Makena shoreline and enjoyed an incredible Maui sunset. The photos came out gorgeous and we just had to share a preview 🙂 Congratulations to Andrea and Adam!

Hawaii Engagement Session | Shannon & Robert
We’re looking forward to Shannon & Robert’s wedding this weekend 🙂 They’re an incredibly sweet couple and we are so excited to be documenting this special time in their lives (Congratulations you two!). We met at La Perouse (Maui) and enjoyed a fun hour-long eSession among the black lava and colorful sunset. Here are a few of our favorite images from our time together…
Hūnlǐ Bridal Portraits – with Meili Autumn and Tamara Catz
We recently joined forces with Maui’s best for this fun, stylized bridal shoot. Meili Autumn worked her magic with the ladies’ hair and makeup, while Tamara Catz provided these exceptional bridal dresses. From the jungle to the sea shore, we incorporated elements of the islands to tell a story of two modern Hawaii brides.

The Wedding of Hamish & Melissa | A Sugarman Estate Event
Melissa & Hamish grew up on opposite sides of the world; Hamish from Australia and Missy from New Jersey. This distance didn’t stop them from finding each other. So when marriage was the next step, Maui became the perfect halfway point for their international destination wedding. The couple decided they would exchange vows at the oceanfront Sugarman Estate in Makena because, “it has a better lawn,” explains Hamish. “He’s a fan of lawns,” Missy says with a smile. So it was settled, and on that beautiful day, the 16th of August, they became husband and wife. The ceremony was full of expression; loved ones gave speeches, sang songs and the newly wed couple completed their union with a sand ceremony. It was an amazing day to witness; the whole event was a reflection of the couple’s colorful elegance, even the island seemed to celebrate turning out one of the most brilliant sunsets we’ve ever seen.
Congratulations to Hamish & Melissa, wishing you both a lifetime of love & happiness together!

A Hawaii Engagement | Alexandra & Stefan
Alexandra (Xandra) was visiting Maui for her twin sister’s wedding when she was surprised with a proposal of her own. Stef, her sweetheart, had planned a romantic day-trip to Maui’s remote jungle town of Hana. It was here that he popped the question, and she said ‘yes’! We met up with this awesome couple a few days later to create a collection of photographs celebrating this special time in their lives. With so many images to choose from, here are a few of our favorites.

This week we met Dani and Chris from Alberta, Canada for a fun engagement session on Maui’s south shore. Now, we’re looking forward to photographing Dani and Chris’s wedding this Thursday in Kihei 🙂 More coming soon…
Wailea Family Sunset
Life is good when you and your family are hanging out on a beach in Maui! Last week, the Xie Family invited us (and our cameras) along to capture some special moments and memories of their third trip to Hawaii. We had so much fun! Here are several photographs from this one-hour family portrait session in Wailea…

Four Generations
It was a beautiful evening on Maui’s west side when we met up with this fun-loving family. They were vacationing in Hawaii to celebrate Grandpa’s retirement and asked us to photograph this memorable time in their lives. Four generations and nine family members were present, from great-grandchildren to great grandma. Here are a few portraits from our family session together…
Thank you Brie and family for inviting us to be part of your vacation. It was a pleasure to meet you all and we hope to see you back on Maui soon! Aloha.

A Maui eSession with Natalie & David
We met up with Natalie and David a few days before their Maui wedding to talk story, make photographs and watch a beautiful sunset. The couple looked amazing dressed in all white against the black lava rock landscape and shoreline. Natalie also brought along a white parasol, a wedding gift from her family in Thailand that we used in a few of her portraits.
We’re so happy to have met this wonderful couple and thrilled to be photographing their wedding day tomorrow. We look forward to all the memories and photographs to come! For now, here are a few of our favorite shots from the beach side engagement session with our (soon-to-be) bride and groom. Aloha and Congratulations to Natalie & David.

A West Maui Family Portrait Session
A couple weeks back, we met up with Brett, Megan and Coop on Maui’s westside for a fun family portrait session. We had a great time with young Mr. Coop, who seemed to have developed a bit of a crush on his photographer, Madelynne 🙂 (He kept giving her “the eye” and smiling shyly). We started our session in a nearby grassy field, then moved down to the black lava shoreline for a spectacular sunset. The final photographs are a combination of candid moments and portraits of this wonderful family from California. Here are a few of the images from our time together….
Mahalo to Brett, Megan and Coop! It was a pleasure to meet you and we look forward to the next time you visit Maui! Aloha.

Before The Big Day: An Engagement Session with Kate & Dave
Kate and Dave will be “tying the knot” in a few days at the Majestic Maui Estate near Lahaina. To kick off their wedding week, we met for a one-hour engagement session at the beautiful Olowalu Peninsula. It was a sunny afternoon on Maui and we choose a special location for the fun couple from Massachusetts.
Our session was very relaxed and Kate and Dave were so easy going and natural in front of the camera. We’re grateful for the opportunity to meet and photograph these two and very excited to document their wedding later in the week!
Martha & Russell – An Intimate Family Wedding
Martha & Russell are no strangers to paradise. Florida natives, this couple decided to travel to Maui to exchange their vows amongst their island ohana. Married on the 24th of February in a backyard ceremony in Makawao, they were surrounded by an intimate group of loved ones. Rose (Martha’s sister-in-law) opened the ceremony with a proper Hawaiian blessing, while a close family friend officiated their wedding. Martha looked radient with her flower crown, hand-made bouquet and white pearls, while the groom Russell wore the traditional maile lei. It was inside a bougainvillea heart, they officially became Mr. & Mrs. We would personally like to thank this wonderful couple and their family for allowing us to be part of their beautiful and intimate ceremony. Congratulations!

The Engagement of Jenny & Riley – A Family Affair
We met up with Jenny and Riley on a beautiful evening at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua. Both their families were present and dressed in fuchsias, reds and oranges. This was a momentous occasion in their lives, not only for Riley and Jenny who were recently engaged, but for the whole family; This was the first time the two families had ever met!
After photographing a few group shots in front of the holiday decorated lobby and Christmas tree, we headed down to the sea cliffs for our family portrait session. The Maui sunset was warm and casting a perfect light for our portraits. The entire group of 11 was wonderful, gracious and so fun to photograph. The best part was seeing the newly engaged couple together; there is so much love and happiness radiating off of them!
This was such a fun shoot and we send our enthusiastic congratulations to Riley, Jenny and the whole gang! Thank you for inviting us be part of this special time in your lives. May your marriage be blessed! Aloha.
“Generations” – A Wailea Family Portrait Session
We met this family from Oahu on a Friday morning at one of Maui’s beautiful beaches. Rain and high winds had been threatening to dampen the day but when the sun finally arose that morning we were greeted with gorgeous weather. The whole family arrived dressed in blues and Grandma and Grandpa were even there! Three generations together for a morning portrait session in Wailea… this was going to be fun!
Anderson was the perfect gentleman. He showed up looking sharp and ready for his portraits with a big smile. The closer we got to the water however, the more the real kid inside of him came out; he LOVES the water. It wasn’t long before he was completely drenched, rolling around in the surf and loving life. When it was time to leave he’d “fall” into the sand so he could have another opportunity to jump in and rinse the sand off. All he kept asking was when they were coming back to the beach so he could play more.
Jillian was an absolute cuttie. More reserved then her older brother about getting portraits taken, she made us work hard for our shots. And like any truly fashionable lady she even had an outfit change during the shoot, from her powder blue dress back to her signature color, pink. She too was another water child, following her brother fearlessly into the surf to play.
Full of life and love, this family was an absolute joy to meet and photograph. Thank you Erika, Bill, Fred, Raynette, Anderson and Jillian!
Maternity Session – Liz and the Pisces Princess
This was my first maternity session, ever. I was honored when my good friend Liz asked me to photograph her during this special time. Her little girl is due in early March making her a water baby. This location instantly came to mind; a 50 foot waterfall drops into a broad pool surrounded by lush jungle and volcanic cliffs. A perfect place for the baby pisces to have her first photo shoot…
Thank you Liz and Ian for sharing this special time with us. Aloha.
Mr. and Mrs. – The Wedding of Stephanie and Andrew
It is a beautiful day at the historic Olowalu Plantation House. Our bride and groom are getting ready. The flowers and leis are arriving and the tables are being set. Family and friends are gathering from California all the way to New York, and there is the sound of waves gently lapping up on the shore. A stillness is in the air as everyone prepares for the ceremony. This is the wedding day of Stephanie and Andrew…
From their first email, we could tell that Stephanie and Andrew were a fun loving couple. They joked with us from the very start and shared stories like we were old friends.
The officiant was incredible and heartfelt as he sounded the conch, recited Hawaiian chants and involved the entire family in the beautiful union of Stephanie and Andrew. The entire ceremony took place just fifty feet from the sea shore while palm trees and a bright blue sky stood as the backdrop.
A spectacular sunset as seen from the shores of the Olowalu Plantation House, November 3rd, 2012. Stephanie and Andrew basked in their first moments as husband and wife.
The evening was extraordinary; Great food and speeches accompanied by dancing. Sparklers came out and the newly joined families celebrated under the giant trees and infinite starry sky.
Congratulations to Stephanie and Andrew, and also to your wonderful families, thank you for having us as your photographers!
A special thanks to:
Coordinator: Cherise from The Perfect Wedding Maui; the day flowed beautifully!
Flowers: Trish from Dellables Maui ; floral works of art!
Venue: Maui’s Historic Olowalu Plantation House; an incredible ocean front venue!
Much Aloha,
Matthew and Madelynne
“Love In Action” – A Babymoon Session in Wailea
I’d never heard the term “babymoon” before meeting Irene and Darren. A few months from now, they’ll be welcoming their first child into the world; A truly awesome and life changing event. But that isn’t the only reason this couple came to Maui… this was also to celebrate their (slightly delayed) honeymoon!
The newlyweds were married in May of this year in their home state of Texas. They shared how they had fallen in love with Hawai’i years ago when they first visited O’ahu. They were drawn to the kind natured people of Hawai’i, the beautiful beaches and turquoise water. Now they had come to the Maui for their second island retreat.
Madelynne and I met the couple in the lobby of the beautiful Hotel Wailea. They were so cute! Unlike most hotels on the south side, the Hotel Wailea is not on the waterfront. Instead in sits perched on the subtle slopes of Haleakala with incredible views of Kihei, Maʻalaea, Wailea and Makena. The grounds are beautiful with lush plant life, waterfalls and a small creek that flows under the hotel and across the entire property; A beautiful location for photographs.
As the sun approached the horizon, we headed down the hill to Po’olenalena Beach and continued our portrait session. The sandy shoreline, lava rock and kiawe trees made for a great background to this amazing couple.
As the sunlight faded, we sat together on the beach and enjoyed the saturated sky and crescent moon over the nearby island of Kaho’olawe. This was their final day of their vacation and it felt fitting to shoot one last image of the couple standing together in silhouette of the sea and sky.
Our sincere gratitude goes to this wonderful couple from Texas. Congratulations to you both! We can’t wait to meet the keiki on his first trip to Hawai’i 🙂
