South Maui – Ohana Photo Session

Some of my fondest memories involve traveling with my family. There is something about leaving home together to explore a new landscape, a new culture and a new environment that really brings everyone together. It happens in those simple moments; watching a sunset, walking down the beach, sharing a laugh, seeing a whale breach or a turtle pop it’s head up for a breath. Family trips are also a great time to add professional photographs to the family album – especially here in Hawaii with the abundance of natural beauty and gorgeous locations – Not to mention the fresh tans and relaxed vibes the island bestows on it’s visitors 🙂

Each family session is unique. Scheduled at a beautiful Maui beach or nature location, we create a collection of photographs that include group photos, individual portraits, couples portraits and candid shots. By creating a relaxed and fun environment, we aim to capture the true personality of each family group and the individuals who make up the ohana (family). We adore each and every family we meet, and feel so honored to be able to step into their lives, their vacation and be able to create a truly special collection of images that will be cherished forever.

Below is a selection of photos from a recent family portrait session on the south shore of Maui. It was a beautiful afternoon and sunset at Po’olenalena Beach Park (one of our favorite locations). Lots of laughter and smiles throughout the session – Wonderful memories for a wonderful family 🙂

Birds of Paradise: The Maui Wedding of Shannon and Robert

These two are just about the sweetest couple you could ever meet! We first photographed them at our pre-wedding photo session on Maui’s youngest lava flow (La Perouse); It was a beautiful spring day with wildflowers blooming out of the black lava rock and butterflies buzzing about. The sunset was vibrant and colorful, and small surf made it possible to enter the water and capture an absolutely gorgeous portrait with a sky-meets-sea backdrop.

A couple days later we photographed their wedding at Wailea’s Marriott Beach Resort. It was a perfect day for a beach wedding and the resort property provided us with stunning settings for portraiture, details and getting ready photographs. Their theme was “Birds of Paradise” (Shannon’s favorite flower), all the floral arrangements were created by Maui’s top florist, Dellables. The entire day was magic… full of beauty and love – A special day for a special couple. Congratulations to Shannon and Robert!

The Wedding of Hamish & Melissa | A Sugarman Estate Event

Melissa & Hamish grew up on opposite sides of the world; Hamish from Australia and Missy from New Jersey.  This distance didn’t stop them from finding each other.  So when marriage was the next step, Maui became the perfect halfway point for their international destination wedding.  The couple decided they would exchange vows at the oceanfront Sugarman Estate in Makena because, “it has a better lawn,” explains Hamish.  “He’s a fan of lawns,” Missy says with a smile.  So it was settled, and on that beautiful day, the 16th of August, they became husband and wife.  The ceremony was full of expression; loved ones gave speeches, sang songs and the newly wed couple completed their union with a sand ceremony.  It was an amazing day to witness; the whole event was a reflection of the couple’s colorful elegance, even the island seemed to celebrate turning out one of the most brilliant sunsets we’ve ever seen.

Maui Family Portraits | Introduction to the Islands

This was the Wong family’s first trip out to the Hawaiian Islands. For our session together we took them to one of our favorite locations on the West Side of Maui.  This area, known for its beautiful reef, also was a hub for the sugar industry during the 19th century.  The location has remnants of the old cane processing plant and a small pier that juts out into the crystal clear waters.  It was here that we spent our session getting to know this wonderful family.  Their son Evan was especially fascinated with the assortment of black lava and white coral rocks that covers the beach; that was, until Madelynne introduced him to the wonders of digital photography 🙂  Helping him hold the camera, he was able to take his first portraits of each member of his family (at bottom of post).

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Wong family!  We hope you all loved your time on the islands.

Lahaina Love – The Wedding of Mike & Kim

The historic Lahaina Town is special place for Mike and Kim. Not only is it the location of their wedding day, but it is also the very place that they met over 12 years ago.  At that time, Kim was living on Maui and waitressing in the small beach town.  Mike was vacationing with his family, and happened to be seated in Kim’s section of the restaurant one night.  The rest is history.  They had their first date here, and to make this place even more special, Mike later proposed on the beach down the street.

On May 11th, they came back with family and friends to continue their relationship with Lahaina.  This time it was to exchange vows on the same shoreline that had been so significant to their lives.  There were some tears, lots of laughter, extraordinary floral arrangements and an outrageous sunset.  We were there with our cameras to photograph this momentous occasion and want to express our gratitude and congratulations to this incredible couple.

Met in New Zealand, Married on Maui

On April 27th, family and friends from all over the Pacific came to Maui to celebrate the union of Marnie and Rikki.  Each side of their family tree is rooted in Pacific Island cultures (Maori and Hawaiian), which made for a truly extraordinary wedding day full of tradition and heart felt celebration.  We feel blessed to have been invited by this wonderful couple and excited to share these first photographs of their wedding day. Four Generations

It was a beautiful evening on Maui’s west side when we met up with this fun-loving family.   They were vacationing in Hawaii to celebrate Grandpa’s retirement and asked us to photograph this memorable time in their lives.  Four generations and nine family members were present, from great-grandchildren to great grandma.  Here are a few portraits from our family session together…

A West Maui Family Portrait Session

A couple weeks back, we met up with Brett, Megan and Coop on Maui’s westside for a fun family portrait session. We had a great time with young Mr. Coop, who seemed to have developed a bit of a crush on his photographer, Madelynne 🙂 (He kept giving her “the eye” and smiling shyly). We started our session in a nearby grassy field, then moved down to the black lava shoreline for a spectacular sunset. The final photographs are a combination of candid moments and portraits of this wonderful family from California. Here are a few of the images from our time together….

The Engagement of Jenny & Riley – A Family Affair

Jenny & Riley

We met up with Jenny and Riley on a beautiful evening at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua.  Both their families were present and dressed in fuchsias, reds and oranges.  This was a momentous occasion in their lives, not only for Riley and Jenny who were recently engaged, but for the whole family;  This was the first time the two families had ever met!

After photographing a few group shots in front of the holiday decorated lobby and Christmas tree, we headed down to the sea cliffs for our family portrait session.  The Maui sunset was warm and casting a perfect light for our portraits.  The entire group of 11 was wonderful, gracious and so fun to photograph.  The best part was seeing the newly engaged couple together;  there is so much love and happiness radiating off of them!

This was such a fun shoot and we send our enthusiastic congratulations to Riley, Jenny and the whole gang!  Thank you for inviting us be part of this special time in your lives.  May your marriage be blessed!  Aloha.

“Generations” – A Wailea Family Portrait Session

We met this family from Oahu on a Friday morning at one of Maui’s beautiful beaches.  Rain and high winds had been threatening to dampen the day but when the sun finally arose that morning we were greeted with gorgeous weather.  The whole family arrived dressed in blues and Grandma and Grandpa were even there!  Three generations together for a morning portrait session in Wailea… this was going to be fun!

Bill & Erika

AndersonAnderson was the perfect gentleman.  He showed up looking sharp and ready for his portraits with a big smile.  The closer we got to the water however, the more the real kid inside of him came out; he LOVES the water.  It wasn’t long before he was completely drenched, rolling around in the surf and loving life.  When it was time to leave he’d “fall” into the sand so he could have another opportunity to jump in and rinse the sand off.  All he kept asking was when they were coming back to the beach so he could play more.

JillianJillian was an absolute cuttie.  More reserved then her older brother about getting portraits taken, she made us work hard for our shots.  And like any truly fashionable lady she even had an outfit change during the shoot, from her powder blue dress back to her signature color, pink.  She too was another water child, following her brother fearlessly into the surf to play.

Fred & Raynette

The Boys

Full of life and love, this family was an absolute joy to meet and photograph.  Thank you Erika, Bill, Fred, Raynette, Anderson and Jillian!

“Love In Action” – A Babymoon Session in Wailea

I’d never heard the term “babymoon” before meeting Irene and Darren. A few months from now, they’ll be welcoming their first child into the world; A truly awesome and life changing event. But that isn’t the only reason this couple came to Maui… this was also to celebrate their (slightly delayed) honeymoon!

The newlyweds were married in May of this year in their home state of Texas. They shared how they had fallen in love with Hawai’i years ago when they first visited O’ahu. They were drawn to the kind natured people of Hawai’i, the beautiful beaches and turquoise water. Now they had come to the Maui for their second island retreat.

Madelynne and I met the couple in the lobby of the beautiful Hotel Wailea. They were so cute! Unlike most hotels on the south side, the Hotel Wailea is not on the waterfront. Instead in sits perched on the subtle slopes of Haleakala with incredible views of Kihei, Maʻalaea, Wailea and Makena. The grounds are beautiful with lush plant life, waterfalls and a small creek that flows under the hotel and across the entire property; A beautiful location for photographs.

As the sun approached the horizon, we headed down the hill to Po’olenalena Beach and continued our portrait session. The sandy shoreline, lava rock and kiawe trees made for a great background to this amazing couple.

As the sunlight faded, we sat together on the beach and enjoyed the saturated sky and crescent moon over the nearby island of Kaho’olawe. This was their final day of their vacation and it felt fitting to shoot one last image of the couple standing together in silhouette of the sea and sky.

Our sincere gratitude goes to this wonderful couple from Texas. Congratulations to you both! We can’t wait to meet the keiki on his first trip to Hawai’i 🙂

Maui Meets Seattle – The Wedding of Jenna and David

Tattoos and flowers; shades of yellow and grey; a perfect wedding day for the Maui born bride and the groom from Washington State. Above the beaches, on the west slope of Haleakala, Jenna and David were married under a blue sky on the lawn of her family home. After days of rain, the sky cleared and the sun shined on their wedding celebration.

After a beautiful ceremony, we headed up the mountain to a clearing at the edge of Maui’s Kula Forest Reserve. Here we had beautiful bi-coastal views of the island and enjoyed an incredible sunset while photographing the newlyweds and their bridal party.

The family ‘amakua, an owl, adorned the invitations, cake, centerpieces and much of the decor while rings symbolize the bond of family.

Congratulations David and Jenna!

‘Ohana – An Oahu Family Portrait Session

We met Bridget, Matt and Dylan at Big Beach Makena (Maui, Hawaii) very early on a Sunday.   The sea and sky were both calm after days of rain and the earth had a sweet smell as it dried in the morning sun. Everything was just right for our portrait session; the beach was empty, the light was beautiful and everyone was excited for the shoot.  Well, maybe not everyone.  Young Dylan walked slowly and cautiously behind the rest of us.  He didn’t much care for our attempts to cheer him up nor for any attempt of taking his photograph.  After a trying a couple different angles, nothing seemed to work.  So, I decided to let him have a go at the camera.  Focusing on mom and dad, I guided his little finger to the shutter release and “click” went the camera.  He loved it.  Looking at the LCD screen on the back of the camera he saw his first photograph and pointed to the subject, “Mommy”.

The boys arrived at the beach in matching green polos and khaki shorts which, by any measure, is extremely adorable.  Mom was radiant and carried a baby girl in her belly who will join us in just 10 weeks.  She cracked jokes and reminded us (several times) that she is very ready “for this thing to get out of me!”.  It was a fun time together and we captured some truly beautiful moments with our cameras.  Here are a few of our favorites from that morning. Enjoy, and if you feel so inclined we’d love to read your comments below.  Aloha.
